Abstract

The paper offers a basic theoretical framework and the resulting practical implications of an EU country’s participation in ERM II. We draw on the experience of some countries that have already gone through the mechanism or have been involved in it for a long time. The main focus is on the fulfilment of the Maastricht criteria and the expected development of the monitored indicators in the context of the new rules applicable to EU countries wishing to join the euro area. In particular, this concerns the requirement for countries that have not yet adopted the euro to join the banking union at the same time as joining ERM II.
